Summer School on Renewable Energy – Start Up Edition from Solar-Institut Jülich (SIJ) at the FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences

The SIJ at FH Aacen announced their Summer School on Renewable Energy – Start Up edition consisting lectures, excursions, and workshops on the topic “Grüne Energie und Startups”.

Apply now if you are interested in research and development in the field of scientific instruments and their applications. SIJ’s work encompasses various areas such as physics, engineering, and materials science and collaborates with industry partners, universities, and research institutions to conduct research projects and provide innovative solutions in the field of scientific instrumentation.

Note that the school is conducted in the German language.

Recent IGCS fellow Charlotte Draese, affiliated with Laboratory of Organic-Geochemical Analysis, Institute of Geology and Geochemistry of Petroleum and Coal at the RWTH Aachen University, Germany, participated in an exchange research program at the Department of Civil Engineering of IIT Madras, Chennai, India, between 19. February to 05. March 2023. Their research topic is “Coastal and estuarine sediment archives for flood-induced pollution in subtropic/tropic areas.”

Special thanks to their supervisor Prof. Dr. Jan Schwarzbauer of RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and Prof. Indumathi Manivannan Nambi at their host institution in Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India.

Charlotte’s research project focuses on the impact of floods and sediment particles on the pollution levels in the Adyar and Cooum river systems. The study aimed to identify areas where sediment particles accumulate undisturbed during floods, creating temporary records of flood and pollution history. The research also sought to reconstruct the pollution history of the rivers and identify indicators of anthropogenic pollution sources.

IGCS’ flagship teaching project is the annual interdisciplinary Summer and Winter schools. The annual schools are held under the motto of one of our IGCS focus areas and are organized by the respective area coordinators and their partners. The itinerary is about two weeks long and consists of lectures, discussions, group work, and field trips. The Winter Schools take place at IIT Madras in Chennai in February / March, while the Summer School takes place at one German partner university in June / July. IGCS school participant Angel Jessieleena A, affiliated with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India, participated in the last IGCS Summer School 2022 at the RWTH Aachen University, Germany, between 18. July to 29. July 2023 on the theme “Sustainable Waste Management in The Nexus of Climate Change and Low Carbon Economy” under the IGCS focus area of Waste Management. Special thanks to former IGCS Area Coordinators, Prof. Dr. Martin Kranert at Institut für Konstruktionstechnik und Technisches Design (IKTD) – Universität Stuttgart, Germany, and Prof. Dr. R. Vinu at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India, and former IGCS Postdoc, Dr. Gabriela Garcés, also from Universität Stuttgart, Germany for organizing the event.

Angel is a Ph.D. candidate, and their research focuses on the fate and transport of microplastics in surface water bodies. They attended the Summer School 2022 to get a better understanding of sustainability, climate change, low carbon, decarbonization, and carbon footprint concepts and their importance as environmental engineers.
